16 January - Color Switch

At some stage recently, Leah asked me which fuel she should be putting in the car. Simple question, and I thought with a simple answer. Made even more simple by the colors of the different fuels.

Now Ive been filling up cars for a LOT of years now, and always in the past, Unleaded was green or blue, premium is yellow, and a Higher Quality premium was often red, but sometimes varied depending on the branding.

NEVER has regular unleaded been yellow. And Premium been blue. Its the other way around. Well, at least it was.

Leahs question brought some issues, when she said she uses the yellow one. I said no problem, thats premium, but fine. And all was well.

Until Today. Today I filled up at Caltex. And noticed something. At Caltex, they have switched the colors. Regular Unleaded is Yellow. Premium (Vortex) is Blue. It didnt make sense. Why would they do this?

Then I twigged. Trickery. Thats what it is. For all those innocent people out there who just look at the color, and go with Blue for Regular Unleaded. But at Caltex, thats Premium.

Nice move Caltex. A simple color switch, and you have probably increased your revenue by a decent percentage!
